Haikus for High Stress

Working as a creative for a quick paced agency can be draining. You should always take the time to relax and massage your brain, if you run out of steam then you might end up resenting creating.

I like to take a break from strategies and numbers by writing haikus. The ancient Japanese art consists of making a verse in three lines. Line one has 5 syllables, line 2 has 7 syllables, and line 3 has 5 syllables. People are usually taught the syllable count, but another factor that makes a haiku a haiku and not just a verse is that it’s a mood poem. You’re not supposed to use any metaphors or similes. These simple restrictions create a mini challenge that you can use to generate ideas or give your brain a break.

An example:

I love cats so much
