I was recently given advice from a woman who works at a Dallas advertising agency. When she learned I’d be graduating soon, she said “When you’re on an interview, be sure to ask questions.” I thought – sure, show your interest in the company.
She went on to explain how important it is to understand a company’s culture. She’d bounced around a few agencies after graduating when she realized she wasn’t being choosy. The pressure of landing a job out of college can be stressful, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle.
The kombucha taps and ping pong perks are inarguably fun, but agency values drive the environment you’ll be working in. Get a feel for the kind of people who work there and what the agency does for their employees and clients. Thankfully, advertising is an industry that offers a range of agency structures, if agencies are what you’re into.
